Charles
IX’s Grand Tour of France (1564-6) was planned at the end of 1559: Francis
II, his mother Catherine de Medici and his uncles the Guise brothers, wanted to
go to Amboise (for Lent 1560), then to Poitiers, Bordeaux, Bayonne, Toulouse,
and lastly to winter in Languedoc and Provence (Letter from Chantonnay to Philip II of Spain, Blois, 2
December 1559: Archives Nationales, Paris, K1492; Archivo Documental Español, Negociaciones con Francia (Madrid,
1950), 1:107).
The project was stopped because of the ‘tumult of Amboise’ in March 1560.
